The United Nations Opens the Signing Process for the First International
Convention on the Prevention and Suppression of Cybercrime. The United Nations Convention on Cybercrime was formally adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 24 December 2024 in New York through Resolution 79/243. Serving as the first comprehensive international treaty addressing cybercrime, the Convention establishes a framework of legal and technical measures for States to prevent, investigate, and prosecute cybercriminal activities. It further seeks to enhance international cooperation, particularly in the collection and exchange of electronic evidence related to serious offenses.
Riyadh Design Law Treaty milestones
The Riyadh Design Law Treaty (RDLT) was adopted on November 22, 2024,
and will enter into force three months after there have been 15 ratifications or accessions. The objective of the Treaty is to streamline the procedures for design protection. May 5, 2025 The International Conference on Intellectual Property and Development in 2025 was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) under the theme “Intellectual Property and Innovation in Addressing Global Health Challenges.” The conference aimed to examine the role of intellectual property rights in stimulating innovation, facilitating technology transfer, and improving access to medicines and health technologies. Experts and researchers from various countries participated, discussing the legal and developmental dimensions of intellectual property in both developing and developed nations. The conference included multiple panels and dialogues focusing on health innovation, IP incentives, and technology transfer. The sessions emphasized the importance of balanced policies that protect innovation while ensuring equitable access to health products. The conference highlighted the promotion of local production in developing countries through partnerships between the public and private sectors. Challenges such as antimicrobial resistance were addressed, emphasizing the need to encourage research and development of new technologies. International Community of IP Judges Assembles for the 2025 WIPO
Intellectual Property Judges Forum. The WIPO Judicial Forum 2025 was convened in Geneva on 14–15 October 2025, bringing together approximately 520 judges from nearly 100 jurisdictions worldwide. The event served as a significant international platform for examining emerging legal issues in the field of intellectual property amid the profound transformations that characterize the era of digital innovation.
The forum’s sessions explored a series of core themes, including the evolving scope of legal protection for intangible assets; judicial challenges posed by artificial intelligence and machine learning; the delicate balance between the rights of innovators and the imperatives of fair competition; and the shifting landscape of disputes involving data, software, and cross-border digital platforms.
In addition, the forum offered a venue for comparative judicial dialogue on best practices in interpreting international instruments relating to intellectual property protection, enhancing mechanisms of judicial cooperation, and strengthening national courts’ capacities to adjudicate technically complex IP disputes.
